Carrollwood Barber Shop opened its doors in 1962 with a simple mission: to provide exceptional haircuts and genuine hospitality to our Tampa neighbors. What started as a small neighborhood shop has grown into a beloved community institution, serving multiple generations of families who trust us with their most essential looks.
Our founder, brought old-world barbering traditions to Carrollwood with a vision of creating more than just a place to get a haircut. He wanted to build a gathering place where men could relax, catch up on local news, and leave looking and feeling their best. That spirit continues today in every interaction with our customers.
Brenda Murray, owner, became involved in the barbering business when she met her late husband, Raymond D. Murray I, in 1999. Prior to that time, Brenda had a 30-year career with the Tampa Police Department where she was assigned to various positions, from uniformed patrol officer to Captain of the Administrative Division.
Shortly after meeting Ray, the two of them realized the former location of the shop was too small to keep up with the growing demand for business. Taking advantage of the opportunity to lease the much larger space next door, Brenda and Ray embarked upon the mission of securing, designing, building and equipping the new shop with antiques that uniquely characterize the CBS as a Turn-of-The 20th Century barber shop and museum. While not working, Brenda loves quilting and traveling.
Raymond D. Murray I (Ray), purchased the Carrollwood Barber Shop in 1980 while working for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department. In 1986, Ray retired the badge to pursue a career in barbering. Throughout his 44 year career in barbering, Ray owned several barber shops in the Tampa Bay Area. Carrollwood was his first shop and the one closest to his heart. Pursuing and acquiring barberbilia; particularly those items related to the late 1900's, was one of his favorite pastimes.
Ray's two children and step-daughter grew up in the Carrollwood Barber Shop. Each of them are currently pursuing their own careers as barbers.
Ray loved history; music (mostly 70's Rock); and Elvis Presley. While not working, Ray enjoyed boating, water skiing and spending time at the beach. He shared Brenda's passion for traveling.
Ashley Ward is a Tampa native with a deep love for music, dancing, art, reading, and yoga. Her creativity and passion for connecting with people first led her to a successful career in hospitality. But after years in the industry, she found her true calling behind the barber chair. Now a skilled barber, with five (5) years experience, Ashley brings her artistic eye and warm energy to every client she serves.
When she's not at the shop, Ashley enjoys spending time with her spouse and their daughter, soaking up the Florida sunshine and living life with intention and style.
David Beltran is a third generation Barber, following in the footsteps of his father, his fraternal uncle and grandfather. He received his Barber's license from Emma's Beauty Academy, PuertoRico, in 1981. In addition to his 44 years of barbering, David has previously owned three barbershops. While comfortable with any style haircut, David credits his father for making him the master of the perfect flat top. He also enjoys giving straight razor shaves.
David has a variety of pastimes; he enjoys watching and participating in all manner of sports; he is an artist and painter; as well as a musician. Mostly, David loves spending time with his family of five children and 12 grandchildren.
Alencar, the newest barber on our team, came to the United States, from his native country of Brazil, in 1999. Alencar obtained his U.S. Citizenship on July 9, 2024. He is the father of 2 girls and speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German and Latin.
Graduating from the KOE Barber Academy in Lakeland, FL, Alencar loves the barbering environment because it provides the opportunity to meet people from many varied cultures and careers. Giving straight razor shaves is Alen's passion as it reminds him of old western movies. He wants to preserve this historical tradition.
